Project Brief
Create a modern book cover using only monocramatic tones and gold.

I wanted to challenge myself and focus on light and dark without being able to rely on colour.
Picture
This was the original cover, designed by ML Wang, themselves.
Picture
I used art from the artfrom The Wraithmarked Special Edition of 'The Sword of Kaigen' by Felix Ortiz.

The piece felt so indicative of the story, and came from one of my favourite scenes.

Picking the art was easy, the typeface however, was much more difficult. I wanted to lean into the Japanese elements without maing it feel silly.

Project Brief
Create modern-looking book jackets for the classic Timothy Zahn's Star Wars books, known as the Thrawn trilogy, for my personal hard covers.
Picture
Original Books

The trilogy was  published annually from 1991 to 1993 by Bantam Spectra.
The artwork for the covers were created by legendary artist Tom Jung. And, although excellent, felt dated.
Picture
I wanted the design to still feel pulpy like the originals, with a more modern graphic design aesthetic.

I used the art from the comicbook adapation by Mathieu Lauffray, which I though was a perfect fit.

In the tradition of Star Wars, I wanted the second book to feel ominous and dark.

The pick for this was an easy one; created by Marc Simonetti for the Brazillian cover.

In discovering the previous cover, the art for the final book was an easy choice. The colouration, the positioning of Thrawn so prominently, made this my favourite.

This was also done by the AMAZING Marc Simonetti, also for the Brazillian cover.

Project Brief
Try to colour selected images from (my favourite comic book artist of all time)
Joe Madureira in different styles.
Picture
Wolverine & Spider-Man
First up is a pencilled work of Marvel's best, I love what Joe drew here, his pencils were so alive.
Picture
Picture
I wanted to go with a a very crisp style over the very tight pencils. Spider-Man was easy, but Wolverine was a bit more of a challenge.
Picture
With the blade lens flares and the background, I think it really came together.

TMNT
Next, we have a 2 for 1 piece, featuring a pencil only version by Joe and a polished version with inks by the great Tim Townsend.
Picture
For the pencil version, I leaned into a rough water colour style.

For the inked, I wanted a much more conventional approach.

Link
Finally, we have this already brilliant rendered piece by Joe of Link, from 'The Legend of Zelda'. This sketch was my desktop background for a very long time.
Picture
I tried to match the energy of the original with rough colours, and strokes out of the lines. I always loved the pop colours of Windwaker especially, and thought the pink really brought out the more natural greens, yellow and brown of the character.

Try to colour MORE selected images from (my favourite comic book artist of all time)
Joe Madureira in different styles, including a full comic book page.

Savage Wolverine
This is a pencilled scan of a page from Jo's run on 'Savage Wolverine'.

I started with a teal, and started cutting away at it.
Picture
I'm really happy with the final result.

Captain America
I just loved the simplicity of this image, it was clearly just a quick sketch, but I really like it. Joe captured so much of the character, with so few lines.

I started with the face, and then moved onto the costume. I was really happy with how the armour came together.
Picture
I really liked where this ended up, I think the read really makes Cap pop.

Joker
I love this image, so creepy and simply.

All in all, this came together in just a couple of hours. One of my fastest, yet.

Project Brief
Create original posters for a local Theatre Company, promoting 'Macbeth'.
This was one of my favourites projects! I got to dust off my camera and capture my own images, and I think I ended up with some really interesting images.
Picture
I wanted something that captured the dark themes of the play, but also felt modern.

For the two lead posters, I especially wanted to play with light and dark, they have an inverted title between them, and I kept the red colouring and sparks that I thought were indicitive of war and death.

Final Hero Poster for Macbeth
Picture
Final Hero Poster for Lady Macbeth
Picture
I especially wanted to play with the idea of war paint. For Lady Macbeth, the hand print is over her mouth - her power is her words. For Macbeth, it's over the side of face, and espceially his eyes, suggesting he can't see everything.
Picture
I also created assets for the whole cast and crew. And this time, the paint was practical! I think the effect really came together to make for some incredibly interesting photos, that hopefully helped get butts on seats.
