Before Mal Winter, there was an idea.
An idea for an epic, sci-fi/fantasy coming-of-age novel, following two protagonists: twin brothers who were fated to affect all existence. It's revealed in the prologue that one was destined to destroy the universe and that one might be able to save us all. This story was called Lydaer + Kain and was plotted out as a five-book series. This series follows the boys as they grow up in a scientifically advanced culture, where magic exists in the cracks and fringes of society.
This series's first book is titled Seeds of Equilibrium and follows Lydaer and Kain, whose world at ten years old is about to change.
he last draft, D9 (Draft 9), totalled about 95,000 words, which, at the time (2007), was the biggest word count I had mustered. I'm excited to have started Draft 10 in January, and already six chapters done, totalling 25,000 words.
Beyond that word count, I've done a lot of work around the redesign and structure of the book (it turns out I've learned a lot in 13 years!) I've created a six-page breakdown of the magic systems; I've replotted entire sections, added new chapters, and redefined the main character's personalities and arcs.
So the current plan is to complete D10 in June. "Why June, Danny?" you may ask. Well, from June, I will be attempting to find a traditional publisher to release this book.
Self-publishing has been great, but I found I was working on non-writing for months on end when I self-publish, including refining the synopsis, book formatting, graphic design and illustrations for the covers, managing ISBNs, and all the little time-consuming details. If I can utilise an established publisher, I can focus more on the fun part: the writing!
Mal Winter 3
For everyone asking (and there has actually been a few of you, so thank you), Mal Winter 3 is still coming!
Currently titled Mal Winter and the Lucid Eye, Mal 3 is now completely plotted, chapter by chapter. The character arcs and story, and themes all defined, and the book is ready to start. It will be a bit shorter than The Last Titan, a bit more action/adventure, and a little less mystery. I'm excited to share more when I can! Secretly, I've also plotted out Mal Winter 4, not to the same extent, but making sure all the narrative points are still leading where I want them to be.
I'll try and post more updates on these and more throughout the coming months. Wish me luck!
